Dear Al-Furqan Parents,
Assalamu Alaikum
Welcome to the 2010 - 2011 school year! We hope everyone has had a restful summer. We are very excited about the progress our students made last year and have plans for achieving even greater academic goals this year, insha'Allah!
Our First Day of School will be Sunday, August 29, 2010. School hours are 9:45 AM - 1:20 PM followed by Dhuhr prayers.
In efforts to continue providing our students with the very best education possible, we are requesting your assistance with few items this year. We ask you to please review the Handbook located on our website to familiarize yourself with our policies and procedures. There have been changes to our school policies and are all communicated in our Handbook.
To begin the new school year we would like to share with you the following school information:
Grade/Section Assignment: By this time you have received email regarding student grade and section assignments with building maps. Our goal is to prepare Al-Furqan Parents and Students in advance as where to go on the first day of school.
Grades KG thru 4 A are located in the Old Building. Grades 4 B - 12 are located in the New Building on the 3rd floor.
Open House for Al-Furqan Parents: This year Al-Furqan School will be hosting an Open House for Al-Furqan Parents from 9:45 AM - 11:00 AM. The purpose of this Open House is to let parents meet the classroom teachers. Teachers will share their email contact information with parents to facilitate communications. Teachers will briefly review the curriculum, school policies and procedures noted in our school Handbook, which is available on our website.
Ramadan Lunch Policy: Al-Furqan School will provide lunch (pizza slice and water bottle) for KG - 4th grade students only. The school does not provide lunch for students Grades 5-12 during the month of Ramadan. However, if a child wishes to have a snack, they can bring one from home or purchase it from Al-Maidah kitchen.
Attendance: Please ensure that your child arrives on time every Sunday. It is important that we work together to protect your child's instructional time and have less interruptions caused by late student arrival.
Quran Recitation Program: We are extending our Quran Recitation Program up to 6th grade. Parents, we highly encourage you to allot some time daily to participate in Quran reading with your child. The ultimate progress of this program lies with your active involvement and constant encouragement to learn to read the Holy Quran.
Volunteering: Families are required to volunteer at Al-Furqan School. Parents must be available to volunteers at least 8 Sundays in a given school year. Please be sure to Sign In and Sign Out on the day of volunteering. The Sign in/Sign Out Sheets will be available in old building with PSG Help Desk Volunteers. A volunteer must be present for the entire school day 9:45 AM - 1:20 PM. Please review the Volunteer Section of the website for further details.
Parking and Student Drop Off: Traffic in the school complex is one way only. Traffic must enter from the ATWATER STREET gate and exit onto LIGON STREET from the farthest gate passed the old school building. The second gate in between the IAR main building and the old school building will remain closed. Students in KG-3rd grade must be dropped in front of the old Al-Furqan Building.
Students in 4th -12th grade must be dropped at the back door near the Multi-Purpose Hall, so they take the stairs to the go to the third floor of the IAR Main Building. No students are allowed to be dropped at the front door leading to lobby. Students are expected to use stairs, not elevator.
Parking at the school is limited to designated parking spaces and available street parking only. Parking in "No Parking" areas or in spaces blocked off by school security will result in the towing of vehicle at the owners expense. There is no parking in the drop off area in front of the school. This is for emergency vehicles only.
Due to the dangers of street traffic, children should only be dropped off inside the school complex. Children should never be dropped off in the street.

Presenting Ramadan in Public Schools: In spirit of this auspicious month of Ramadan, Al-Furqan School would like to encourage parents to present Ramadan in their child's school. Al-Furqan School wiki contains reference materials that can be utilized to make presentations or craft projects to present at the school. This provides us with a good opportunity to speak about our Islamic Festivities to other non-Muslim students and teachers. Details can be found on our school wiki at Islamic Festivities page.
We are excited about the learning journey that lies ahead for our students at Al- Furqan School. By working together we can ensure that students make even greater Islamic Knowledge gains. Thank you for supporting our Islamic Educational endeavors! We look forward to a great year!
Thank you,
Al-Furqan School Committee
